Project Overview

I created this course to help organizations recognize the critical link between clear English pronunciation and business success. Drawing from my experience as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, I wanted to demonstrate how investing in pronunciation training can significantly enhance communication, reduce costly misunderstandings, and ultimately boost ROI for companies with non-native English-speaking employees.

Vision & Purpose

This is a concept-driven course, though much of its content stems from my experience. My goal was to address a key gap in corporate training by emphasizing the return on investment (ROI) of English pronunciation programs for non-native speakers. In my extensive experience as an ESL teacher working with high-level corporate professionals, I observed that many middle- and upper-level employees struggled with accurate English pronunciation despite their strong command of grammar and vocabulary. This experience underscored the considerable effect that insufficient pronunciation training can have—affecting individual communication and an organization's overall performance.

With English now serving as the global lingua franca non-native speakers outnumber native speakers. While many non-native English speakers excel in grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation often gets overlooked. Yet, even highly advanced learners may struggle to communicate effectively if their pronunciation remains unclear.

Mispronunciations can lead to misunderstandings, hinder collaboration, and ultimately affect business outcomes. This course underscores the vital connection between pronunciation and communication success, urging HR leaders, training professionals, and decision-makers to acknowledge the long-term value of investing in pronunciation training. Using Articulate Rise, I developed an engaging, interactive learning experience that combines valuable content with practical insights, helping organizations prioritize pronunciation as a crucial aspect of their language development initiatives.

Learning Focus

The learning focus of this project was developed with a clear goal: to convey the direct link between effective English pronunciation and the impact on a organization's performance. Specifically, I aimed to help corporate decision-makers understand:

  • The importance of clear pronunciation in business communications and its role in fostering successful global partnerships.

  • The drawbacks of not investing in pronunciation training range from decreased productivity to lost revenue opportunities.

  • The measurable ROI of pronunciation training and demonstrating how improving employees' English pronunciation leads to tangible business benefits.

Through this course, my primary objective was to address key challenges experienced by businesses with a workforce that may struggle with English pronunciation. I specifically aimed to:

  • Illustrate the importance of English as the global business lingua franca and its significance in business communication.

  • Examine why some companies may neglect ESL training programs despite the clear benefits of improved pronunciation.

  • Demonstrate the measurable impact of poor pronunciation on a company's bottom line, from miscommunication to lost business opportunities, and highlight how English pronunciation training can improve overall performance.

  •

These objectives were designed to guide learners through the complexities of English pronunciation in business contexts, providing insights for improving workplace communication.

Target Impact

This course was designed for HR professionals, business leaders, and learning & development (L&D) teams within organizations that employ non-native English speakers. It addresses the challenges companies face when employees' pronunciation impacts their communication skills. Targeted at decision-makers responsible for training budgets, the course emphasizes the strategic business advantage of investing in pronunciation.

Key Concepts

In this section, I focused on explaining the concept of ROI and how it can be negatively affected when companies fail to invest in English pronunciation training for their employees. To illustrate this, I dedicated a section of the course to a situational example that demonstrated the negative outcomes of poor pronunciation in a business context. In this example, a company representative tries to close a deal with a client but struggles due to mispronunciations, which causes confusion and a breakdown in communication. As a result, the sale is lost, and the company misses out on potential revenue. This example highlights the direct impact of poor pronunciation on a companie's bottom line.

Throughout the course, I also included knowledge checks to test learner’s understanding of key concepts as they progressed. These interactive checks allowed the viewer to reflect on the material and ensure they were retaining the lessons about the impact of pronunciation on business communication.

At the end of the course, I included a summary quiz, which reviewed the key topics covered throughout the course, including the ROI of pronunciation training and how it can influence organizational success. The quiz was an overview of the course material where the viewer could apply their knowledge, ensuring they understood how pronunciation training would improve communication, foster stronger client relationships, and ultimately drive ROI.

The course emphasized the importance of investing in pronunciation training to improve employees' communication skills, foster better team collaboration, and reduce misunderstandings. Even though I did not provide specific data or direct evidence of ROI, the course shows that investing in pronunciation training can positively impact performance and success.

Interaction

The course was created using Articulate Rise, utilizing the platform's pre-built templates to create a streamlined, responsive experience. Since Rise’s templates are optimized for mobile devices, I did not need to create wireframes, outlines, or visual mockups for this project.

Instead, I focused on developing engaging content within the framework provided by Rise, ensuring the design was consistent and professional without the need for extensive customization. This approach allowed me to concentrate on creating content that was not only visually engaging but also optimized for a meaningful learning experience.

Big Picture

This course ultimately emphasizes the critical need for organizations to recognize the direct impact of pronunciation training on business success. Drawing from my experience as an ESL teacher, I know firsthand how even highly skilled non-native speakers can struggle with clear communication due to pronunciation challenges and how these issues can hinder workplace performance, client relationships, and business outcomes. This course highlights the importance of investing in pronunciation as a key component of language training, emphasising that its not just about improving language skills but about enabling employees to perform at their best in a globalized business environment.

The key takeaway is clear: organizations must recognize that poor English pronunciation can hinder even the most well-trained employees from communicating effectively. This can lead to missed opportunities and lost revenue.

As an ESL instructor, I’ve witnessed how improving pronunciation builds confidence, reduces communication barriers, and ultimately enhances team collaboration. While the course demonstrates the potential benefits, it’s important to recognize that it would need to be trialed and tested within real organizational contexts to assess its effectiveness. Trialing the training will allow organizations to see firsthand how it positively impacts employee performance, communication, and overall ROI.

In conclusion, the course serves as both an informative resource and a call to action for organizations to invest in pronunciation training as an essential element of their language development programs. With training and a focus on improving English pronunciation, companies can foster  communication, stronger relationships, and better outcomes across all levels of business.
