The Rosary:
An Interactive Guide

Project Overview

I created and developed this concept interactive guide to help Catholics and Christians learn the steps and mysteries of the Rosary while also making it accessible to anyone interested in learning about its history and practice. This concept project provides a comprehensive understanding of how to pray the Rosary, including the significance of each bead and its corresponding prayer.

The guide includes engaging video content that explores the history and purpose of the Rosary, explains the significance of each mystery, and highlights the days on which these prayers are traditionally recited. This interactive experience allows users to deepen their understanding of the Rosary and its meaningful role in spiritual practice.

Audience: Catholics and Christians

Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Visual Design

Tools Used: Figma, , Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Animate, Invideo.IO, Camtasia

 Inspiration

The development of this interactive user guide was rooted in my Catholic faith and personal experience with the Rosary. As a practicing Catholic, the Rosary has been a central part of my spiritual life, and I wanted to share this practice in a way that would be accessible, engaging, and meaningful for others. I reflected on my practice—how I pray, the structure of the prayers, and how it has deepened my faith. I also considered what would have been helpful to me as a beginner.

This concept project was born from my desire to make the Rosary more approachable for those interested in learning but may feel overwhelmed or unsure of how to begin. Many people find the Rosary intimidating, especially without guidance, so I aimed to create a resource that simplifies the practice. The goal is to help beginners feel confident and connected in their practice by breaking down the prayers and highlighting their significance.

The idea evolved further as I thought about how to provide clear, step-by-step instructions. I envisioned an instructional video that explains each prayer, its meaning, and how to move through the beads, making the Rosary more accessible and spiritually enriching for newcomers.

Interaction

This project aimed to create an interactive video that guides users through each prayer of the Rosary. The video highlights the bead movements, displays the prayer associated with each Rosary bead, and provides visual and auditory guidance to assist the user. To enhance engagement, the beads are animated to change color as each prayer is recited, offering a dynamic and interactive experience. This allows users to visually follow along, deepening their understanding of the Rosary’s structure and significance.

In addition to the interactive video, I created an AI-generated video that focuses on the history of the Rosary. I included an overview of its history in video form, believing it would help viewers grasp its significance and strengthen their connection to the practice.

Research

For this project and its development, I researched the Rosary, its significance in Christianity, its structure, and its historical development. I explored how the Rosary began as a simple devotional prayer and evolved into a central practice within the Christian faith and a powerful tool for spiritual growth.

As I explored the Rosary's significance, I focused on its purpose within Catholicism and how it serves as a tool for reflecting on key events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. I wanted to understand its spiritual and religious significance as a meditative and devotional praying tool that could help strengthen faith, offering both comfort and peace to practitioners. This was essential in ensuring the video content would be informative and spiritually enriching for users.

To deepen my understanding, I studied the four sets of Mysteries—Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous—and explored their historical and biblical contexts. I focused on understanding why these particular events were chosen for reflection within the Rosary and how they deepen the meditative experience. I also researched the traditional schedule for praying the Mysteries, gaining insight into how they align with the liturgical calendar and are organized within the Rosary.

In addition to the Mysteries, I studied the prayers traditionally recited during the Rosary, including the Apostles' Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. I paid close attention to the order and significance of the prayers within the Rosary to ensure accuracy in the interactive guide I created.

This research gave me a deeper understanding of the Rosary's purpose and structure, helping me present it in a way that would be both informative and meaningful for users, especially those new to the practice. It formed the foundation for designing my video guide and interactive experience, aiming to share this timeless devotional clearly and engagingly.

Project Stategy

The design approach for this project was structured and methodical, involving multiple stages that helped organize and refine the final product. I began by conceptualizing the overall structure of the video and creating mockups to map out the key elements. These initial steps acted as my roadmap, ensuring that the final result would be engaging and easy for viewers to follow as they learned the Rosary.

The sequence of planning and development included designing the Rosary in Adobe Illustrator, animating the beads in Adobe Animate, and incorporating an AI-generated video using InVideo.IO to create a historical overview of how the Rosary came to be. This AI video offered viewers a deeper understanding of the history behind the Rosary and provided context alongside the instructional content. After completing the animation and AI video, I imported everything into Camtasia for final editing to synchronize the visuals and audio, bringing all the elements into a cohesive video experience.

Each step in this process served as a visual and structural guide, helping me align the prayers, Mysteries, and interactive features with the corresponding visuals and audio. This phase of the project allowed me to break down the content into manageable segments, making the Rosary easy to follow for newcomers while providing historical context and spiritual insight. By focusing on the development from concept to final execution, I created a seamless, interactive, and spiritually enriching guide.

Visual Design

Once the Project Strategy was in place, the Visual Design phase began. This was where I translated the research and strategy into a tangible, interactive guide. I started by gathering inspiration from images of the Virgin Mary, Crucifix, and Rosary. Using Figma, I compiled these images into a mockup board that helped refine the visual direction for the custom Rosary design. This mockup was my visual blueprint for creating the final design in Adobe Illustrator.

In Illustrator, I designed a simplified, clear Rosary image that would resonate with users and be easy to follow. Once the design was finalized, I began working in Adobe Animate to animate the beads. The beads were designed to change color as each prayer was recited as a visual cue to guide them through the prayer sequence.

Full Development

The Development and Production phase combined all the planning and design work into a final interactive video experience. After completing the animation in Adobe Animate, I imported the project into Camtasia for final video editing. In Camtasia, I coordinated the visuals with the audio, ensuring smooth transitions between each video segment. I focused on synchronizing each bead’s color change with the corresponding prayer and added interactive elements such as pauses for reflection.

To further enhance learning, I included a quiz at the end of the guide to reinforce key concepts. This phase involved refining all multimedia elements into a cohesive, dynamic video, creating an engaging and educational experience that supported users in their Rosary practice.

Overview

As this was a concept project, no formal user testing was conducted. In a real-world scenario, user testing would be conducted to gather feedback, refine interactivity, and ensure it resonates with the target audience.

The guide is designed as a simple, accessible guide to learning the Rosary, using a video format that allows users to follow along easily. The aim was to create an experience that is both spiritually enriching and easy to follow, supporting users in integrating the Rosary into their spiritual practice.

Reflection

The key takeaway from this project is the value of combining personal passion with instructional design. By drawing on my own experience and faith, I created a course that is both informative and meaningful. The project demonstrated the potential of multimedia tools like Camtasia, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Animate, and AI-generated video to create an interactive and engaging learning experience.

The use of AI generative video, in particular, played a role in bringing the historical context of the Rosary to life. While this was a concept project, it highlighted the power of technology to make the Rosary more accessible and engaging. Looking ahead, gathering user feedback will help refine the course and maximize its educational effectiveness.
